Meet Milton!

Milton came to North Fork in the winter of 2009.  He was originally from Long Island.

He is an unflappable horse with quite an impressive resume – jousting, trail competitions, hunter shows, jumper shows, dressage shows, eventing, IHSA, terrifying Halloween costumes (airplanes, gondolas, pinatas!), trail rides, combined tests, cross derbies, hunter paces, Canter for the Cause and crowd control at the Loudoun Hunt Point to Points.  He has won the Bailey’s Irish Creme Memorial Trophy (High-Point Field Hunter) and the Kathryn E. Spivey Memorial Challenge Trophy (High-Point Horse) at the North Fork Schooling Show Series in 2013 and 2014, the High-Point Dressage Score of the day at the 2016 Rustbusters Combined Test and Reserve Grand Champion in the FADs Dressage Show 2016 Spring/Summer Series in Intro and Third in Training Level. Even though he has been gracious in doing these things, his real love is hunting.

Although quite the bossy character overall, but on hunting days his personality shines. He gets impatient in the stall – knocking things around and whinnying.  He practically loads himself onto the trailer.  Once he gets to the fixture, he nickers to the hounds and is raring to go.  Milton is quite the force on the hunt field.  He takes great care of his rider but has tons of enthusiasm for the hunt.  He ALWAYS knows where the hounds are on the fixture and if you don’t watch him he will try to leave the Field to go whip-in.  He is the ultimate whipper-in.  Not only does he have a sixth sense for the location of hounds on the fixture, he is amazing at corralling them when they run off or packing them in when going home.  At the end of the hunt, he nickers again to the hounds as they either go back into the kennels or load into the trailer.  He is full of energy and supreme confidence throughout – all of the other horses look to Milton for guidance.  Many members of the hunt joke that “you don’t take Milton hunting, he takes YOU hunting.” In 2015, he won the Willow Award from Loudoun Hunt, which recognizes an exceptional fox hunter, a horse who loves the excitement of the hounds and foxes and enjoys the hunt as much as his rider. Milton just started his sixth season with Loudoun Hunt this year – we are hoping to celebrate his 30th birthday out on the hunt field!
